The name issue and the refugee crisis will be our main focus in the meeting with Kotzias – Poposki

-

The name dispute and the refugee crisis will be the top of the agenda at today’s meeting between Macedonian Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki and his Greek counterpart Nikos Kotzias in Athens. In Athens a suppressed optimism is the current atmosphere regarding the outcome of the visit, saying that things are flowing, the ice is slowly melting and the conditions for finding a compromise are significantly better than before.
Popovski’s visit to Athens, is the first visit of the Head of Macedonian Diplomatic delegation for nearly a decade, comes after Kotzias visited Skopje this summer, where it was agreed that 11 confidence-building measures between the two countries are to be taken and more cooperation in various sectors.
Reporting on the climate in Athens, Greek newspaper “Kathimerini” reports that the Greek Foreign Ministry believe that the conditions to resolve the dispute are more favourable than they were in the past, but they believe that even when a chance for compromise presents itself, Macedonia always has political obstacles.
As an example of such obstacles, the Greek newspaper points to the article by the British newspaper “The Guardian” and the reaction of the Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski. According to the Greek newspaper, PM Gruevski’s denial is in a totally different direction from statements Poposki had made in an interview with “Kathimerini” this weekend. Contradictions among Macedonian politicians, according to the paper, are creating barriers and obstacles to finding a substantial solution over the name issue.
