The general public is bombarded by false news and most of it is on the Intrnet

The current situation with the spread of fake news in the country is serious which should instigate a range of measures to be dealt with. The introduction of media literacy in the country’s educational process is one of the measures that have to be done and it was mentioned at today’s public debate on the subject of “The Inclusion of Media literacy in the Education.”

The Minister of Communications, Accountability, and Transparency, Robert Popovski stressed that the young people in this country primarily inform themselves through the internet and on the other hand, there is a problem with recognizing false news and the disinformation by the citizens.

-Macedonia is at the bottom among 34 countries when it comes to recognizing false news and disinformation. We are convincingly last, and one place ahead is Turkey, and then Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Monte Negro, Bulgaria – stressed Minister Robert Popovski.

The Minister of Education and Science Arber Ademi stressed that the ministry has taken certain measures and additional measures will soon follow. He thinks that the focus should be put on primary and secondary education by introducing subjects in the educational program or by a special subject about media literacy.

Ferruccio Bogo, advisor to the EU’s Delegation in Skopje, during the public debate stressed that media literacy among the young population should be primarily directed towards the ability to recognize false news. He also said that media literacy should become part of the educational program in the Macedonian school system.
