The coronavirus crisis postpones the drafting of new Law on Civil Liability for Insult and Defamation until September

-

Instead of at end of May, as previously planned, United Nations’ Office for Project Services (UNOPS) informed that the release of the analysis on the implementation of  the Law on Civil Liability for Insult and Defamation shall be postponed for late September, Justice Ministry informs.

After the release of the analysis by the expert author, in autumn, working group will be formed that will formulate  an opinion about all issues concerning the Law based on expert’s recommendations and proposals. The analysis of the text should contain international standards and comparative experiences, court practice, including certain changes especially draft- provisions of the law.

A month ago, the Association of Journalists of Macedonia (AJM) has requested that the process of adoption of changes and amendments of the Law on Civil Liability for Insult and Defamation to start as soon as possible, since the country has been obliged to adopt these since 2018.

AJM’s President, Mladen Chadikovski said that the Association has often appealed to judges about fines for journalists for these two felonies to be minimal and not to include jail sentence or high financial penalties for journalists that they couldn’t afford to pay.
