The Chandelier in the Officer’s Home in Bitola lays on the ground waiting for instructions

-

Police are investigating, and the Institute and the Museum of Bitola are awaiting instructions from the Office for the Protection of Cultural Heritage what to do with the remains of the crystal chandelier that for almost six decades decorated the Officers Home in Bitola.

The remains of the demolished chandelier are on the floor of the hall. The police have inspected the site. Now everyone is waiting for the results of the investigation.

“The case is ongoing”, confirmed spokesperson of SVR Bitola Police, Sanja Stamatova.

The Director of the Institute and the Museum of Bitola Zoran Altiparmakov says that after the inspection by police inspectors and the professional staff from the Office for Protection of Cultural Heritage, the chandelier or what remains of has been left on the floor as evidence.

“On Monday, the police inspected the scene and so did our professional teams. I do not see why parts of the chandelier should be sent to the depot, it is evidence and it should remain their”, said Altiparmakov.

According to him, experts from the Office for Protection of Cultural Heritage should send instructions what to do with the remains of the chandelier, he, however, personally doubts that anything can be saved from it.

“We are waiting for instructions from the Administration, but when we get them, so what. The chandelier is so damaged there is no salvation. It’s just like torching a church to the ground, what could you save?” Says Altiparmakov.

The Head of the Institute and the Museum of Bitola have ruled out the possibility that perhaps the chandelier fell down by itself. He says the Officer’s Home is a construction in good condition and it is not possible for it fall by itself, but the work of hooligans who deliberately cut the straps and ropes that held the chandelier up.

“This anarchist behavior must be punished, or those who caused the damage must pay for it, it’s just like the destruction of the facades on Shirok sokak”, Altiparmakov said.

The opposition in Bitola have already made accusations, and have said that after this incident, the Director of the Institute and Museum should bear moral and criminal responsibility for negligence and unprofessional conduct. However, he responded that he does not feel guilty because cultural heritage can not be hidden and locked away from the public but it should be left for all eyes to see and admire its beauty and value.
