Neighborhoods in Tetovo that are set on higher ground are facing water shortages throughout the day. People say they have to fill bottles and barrels with water at friends and relatives who live in the lower part of the city, where there is water but only few hours in the day.
– I live in the higher part of the city. We don’t have water even in the winter. Not the situation is catastrophic. We are forced to fetch water every day- says a resident of Tetovo.
People say that water shortages are usual in the neighborhoods on the hills, but now, in the summer, water is lacking even in the center of the city.
The explanation they give from the municipal works office in Tetovo is the irrational use of water is causing the shortage.
– Water in this period, when it is very hot, is used to wash streets, to water gardens and so on. These days municipal inspectors will go in the field to hand out fines to all citizens who are abusing the water supply- says Samedin Abedini, Head of the sector for water and water channels at JKP Tetovo.
The current supply coming from mountain springs is 400 liters in second, which is enough to provide water to the entire city when the water is not being abused.
