Survey by IRI: Gruevski doesn’t deserve to be re-elected

Macedonian citizens are uncertain about the readiness of their leaders to implement the Przhino Agreement, there are conditions for conducting free and fair elections, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski doesn’t  deserveto be re-elected and there is no freedom of expression. These are the main conclusions of the research conducted by the Centre for Surveys of the International Republican Institute (IRI).

According to the survey, citizens are sceptical that the parties will implement the Przhino Agreement, only 33 percent of participants said that it will be implemented, and 24 percent said it would not be fully implemented.

On the question “Is the Prime Minister, Nikola Gruevski doing a good job and does he deserve to be re-elected?” 52 percent of people said he does not deserve to be re-elected, and 35 percent thinks that it deserves to be Prime Minister.

The polls show that 42 percent of citizens believe that Macedonia is less stable than it was last year, 18 percent believe that it is more stable, and 38 percent say that they have the same stability as the previous year.

The political situation is tense and uncertain, considers 52 percent of the population, while the 29 percent believe it is peaceful and stable situation.

Participants gave SDSM support to get them back into Parliament with a high 67 percent, while 17 percent felt that the opposition should just stay out of Parliament.

When asked whether the Special Prosecuto,r Ms Janeva will be able to investigate cases related to the wire-tapping affairs independently, and without obstructions, 33 percent of participants believe that she can, while 28 percent believe she will have obstructions, and 22 percent are not familiar with the issue.

About 34 percent of people believe that there are conditions for free and fair elections, while 29 percent do not believe there are such conditions for free and fair elections.

51 percent of respondents believe that there is no freedom of expression orfreedom of speech, and the other 44 percent believe it exists.

Support for Macedonia to join the EU has a high 72 percent of participants of the survey and for Macedonia to become a member of NATO – 73 percent.

Data was collected from 1,106 citizens from September 29 – October 5, 2015, using in-person, face-to-face methodology by trained professional interviewers.
