Stoltenberg: Ivanov has to revoke pardons and not ruin Macedonia’s NATO chances

-

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, today warned that Macedonia should not let its political crisis wreck its hopes of joining the Northern Atlantic Alliance, according to “Reuters”

In his first public remarks on the crisis, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg urged President Gjorge Ivanov to revoke the pardons he granted politicians and their associates.

“The door of NATO is still open, but it is crucial that the country’s leaders address problems on the rule of law, including revoking the recent presidential pardons,” Stoltenberg told a news conference, adding that it is important that the minimum condition for normal political democratic life is in place.

The Constitutional Court today froze the election and election campaign, and Parliament Speaker Trajko Veljanoski has scheduled an emergency session besides determining the resignations of the ministers of the technical government. Also, amendments to the Electoral code will be discussed.

The European Commission and the US Embassy in Macedonia welcomed the decision of the Constitutional Court, but sent a message that the pardons must be annulled.
