The Ministry of Education and Science has begun a procedure for selecting an institution that will rank Macedonian state and private universities (league tables) for the fourth time, the ministry told “Meta”.
What is new is that according to the new Law on Higher Education, instead of every two years, higher education institutions will be ranked every three years. The national ranking list of universities is being conducted to contribute to the transparency, quality and efficiency of Macedonian educational institutions.
Officials from the Ministry of Education and Science say that the institution tasked with ranking the universities will be selected via public procurement. Over the past years, a total of three league tables have been put together, which were developed by the Center for Ranking World Class Universities at the Shanghai-based Jiao Tong University , which also ranks universities on a global level.
The first league tables with Macedonian universities were published in 2012, when Pance Kralev was minister and cost 100,000 euros. 19 indicators of academic performance and competitiveness were taken into account, and it covered the main aspects of the mission of higher education institutions such as teaching, research and social services.
