SPO: Without The Law On Witness Protection We Remain Unable To Work On Certain Cases

-

Without amendments to the Law on Witness Protection, it makes the work of the Special Public Prosecutor’s Office difficult, said the SPO, after today’s session of Parliament where the ruling majority did not support the proposed amendments to the SPO (for extending the time for investigations) and the Law on Witness Protection.

Without adopting changes to the Law on Witness Protection makes our work very difficult. Without this law, we remain unable to work on certain cases”, say the SPO.

At today’s plenary session of Parliament, the adoption of amendments to the SPO was fast-tracked, and 36 MPs supported the Law on the SPO, while 54 voted against it.  As for the amendments to the Law on Witness Protection, 42 MPs voted in favour and 52 voted against any changes. With this, Parliament did not adopt either proposal for amendments to these two laws.

After the vote, Ilija Dimovski, Coordinator of the Parliamentary Group of the VMRO-DPMNE said in a press release that today, MPs from the VMRO-DPMNE stuck by their previously stated position, that they would not accept any requests from the SPO, or any new agreements, negotiations and extensions of deadlines beyond the Pržino Agreement.

When asked by a reporter whether the ruling party was afraid that their members will be prosecuted by the SPO and that was the reason why they do not support the bill, Dimovski replied that they are not afraid and that nobody is above the Constitution or above Parliament.

“He who thinks he is above them, will learn the lesson which was taught today”, said Dimovski.
