Council of the EU: Leaders to respect the agreement of 2nd of June

Council of the European Union published the conclusions of the report on Macedonia. As stated, the Council hopes that all leaders of political parties will respect the agreement of 2nd of June which the Council sees as a good start to solve the political crisis in the country.

  • The Council is concerned about the situation in Macedonia, especially for the current political crisis.
  • The Council positively assesses the efforts of political leaders to find a solution to the crisis.
  • The Council also notes the significant first step in resolving the crisis, and that is the agreement of 2nd of June 2015. This agreement sets out the obligations of the leaders of the main political parties to address the serious shortcomings of the rule of law and remain committed to the process of accession to the European Union and the democratic principles of the state, including maintaining good interethnic concerned and full implementation the Ohrid Framework Agreement and strengthening good neighborly relations. The Council feels that the agreement of 2nd of June is a good framework of where further need to move the negotiations. The Council called on political parties in the interests of citizens and the state to take responsibility and immediate measures for a sustainable solution and to engage constructively in political dialogue and to continue their efforts to restore confidence in the institutions.
  • The Council called on political parties to respect the agreement of 2nd of June and to implement all the recommendations of the Commission, starting with urgent reform of the rule of law, human rights, judiciary, media freedom, elections, corruption, politicization of state institutions. Implementation of these recommendations will be monitored by the Commission. Also urgent is the reform in the electoral system which is recommended by OSCE/ODIHR to be able to conduct free, fair and democratic elections.
  • The Council hopes that in the July session of the Council will receive a detailed and concrete proposals on what is planned to be implemented in the coming months.
  • Republic of Macedonia needs to make tangible progress towards meeting the priorities for urgent reforms in line with the conclusions of 16th of December 2014 and 21st of April 2015.
