Schulz: European fear of Tsipras is misplaced

-

The head of the European Parliament Martin Schulz sent a message from Athens and expressed hope that Greece will be able to stay in the EU and on its European path. Schulz, who was the first European official to visit Greece after the elections, had a two-hour meeting with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on which they discussed economic issues, as well as issues of international politics – Russia and the conflict in Ukraine.
Schulz has a positive impression from the meeting, commenting that they had a long, open and honest conversation with Tsipras and they agreed on a number of issues. After the conversation with Tsipras, President of the European Parliament said that he came to the conclusion that the European fear of the new Greek Government is not justified.
-In open talks in Europe, there is fear that the government of Tsipras will make its own way. That is not true. Tsipras’ Government will give proposals and wants to discuss these proposals, to come to a mutually acceptable mutual solution. This is satisfactory message, a message that makes us happy. Surely there will be some disagreements along the way, as we had today, but what is important is that Greece is seeking a joint solution with its partners – said Schulz after the meeting.
In his statements, Prime Minister Tsipras show openness and positive attitude towards EU. He assessed Schulz’s visit as an indicator that the first value of the EU is the acceptance of popular rule, commenting that this meeting helps to create a new relationship and trust between post memorandum Greece and the EU institutions.
