Today, Serbia initialed an agreement with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) to advance security at the external borders of the EU, as well as to manage migration. Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic and European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos signed the agreement.
Avramopoulos explained that the agreement will allow Frontex to conduct border checks in the territory of Serbia and will support the implementation of border control, but will not assume tasks or responsibilities from Serbian forces.
Stefanovic clarified that Serbia is truly committed to opposing all forms of crime and that it is important for the state, in cooperation with all international partners, to do everything necessary for its citizens to be safe. The agreement needs to be ratified by Serbian parliament in order to be enforced.
