Protest against pollution of Skopje

-

Hundreds, mostly young people, gathered for the march today against air pollution in the center of Skopje, organized by the NGO “Go Green”, reports “Radio Free Europe”.

Wearing gas masks to symbolically show that it is hard to breathe in Skopje, protesters shouted “Go Green”, “Who is to blame that our city is gray” and “We want clean air.”

They say that Skopje is probably the most polluted European city.

– Day by day, the level of PM10 particles increases more, coloring the city gray. Every 10 micrograms of PM10 particles in a cubic meter of air increase the risk of lung cancer by as much as 22 percent, and in Skopje, the level of these particles reached up to 700 micrograms a cubic meter. The allowable level of these particles is a maximum of 50 micrograms a cubic meter – say organizers and demand specific measures to prevent pollution.
