An irreconcilable clash between two different concepts of civilization–in these words, the father of the tragically deceased Frosina Kulakova conveyed the essence of the anger caused by her premature death. Thousands of citizens gathered in Skopje this afternoon for the “Justice for Frosina” march.
The protest was led by Frosina’s family. Her father, Todor Kulakov, addressed the thousands gathered, expressing his gratitude for the overwhelming support, which he deemed crucial in this moment.
“It is a matter of system and anti-system,” said Kulakov and recognized his daughter Frosina as one of the heroes of our time.
“A girl you should look up to, a leading intellectual, a designer, with the world within her reach. Once a year she would go to Paris to attend fashion shows, now, before she got killed, she paid to go to Paris for the fourth time,” Kulakov continued, adding that on the other side are “those who are weaned on the bitterness of the anti-system, who turn into drug dealers, abusers, and killers, enabled by judges and prosecutors who are heavily bribed.”
The protest began at 5 PM at the crossroad between Boulevard “Partizanski Odredi” and “29 Noemvri” where Frosina lost her life 5 days ago. She was struck with tremendous speed by 20-year-old Vasil Jovanov, who is now in custody, though he had previously been released despite his past convictions.
The protest was led by students who shouted, “What do we want? Justice!” and “Anyone could be the next!” Citizens made their way to the Assembly, passing the Ministry of Justice, where loud cries of outrage and whistles echoed.
Before Kulakov’s speech in front of the Assembly, the student leader called for a three-minute silence to honor Frosina and asked everyone present to take out their phones and turn on the light.
The citizens carried numerous banners with messages such as “When money talks, justice stays silent and dies,” “It is not the place that is ominous, but the people and the system,” “After every lost child, silence kills even more,” “Each bribe buys a new grave…”
From the Assembly, citizens made their way to the Prosecutor’s Office and the Criminal Court where they once again observed a three-minute silence and turned on their phones’ light.
Frosina lost her life on the night of January 29, 2025, around fifteen minutes past midnight, when Vasil Jovanov, driving under the influence and at high speed, ran a red light and struck her, killing her instantly.
After being placed in custody for 30 days, photos began circulating on social networks showing that he already had a cellphone. The phone was later confiscated, and he was moved to solitary confinement.
Today, during the protest in Kavadarci, Frosina’s sister, Rosica Kulakova demanded accountability from Zoran Jovanov, Vasil’s father, and Judge Daniela Aleksovska Stojanovska who ruled that he should be treated as a young adult and sent to a juvenile facility in Tetovo instead of prison.
