Instead of building a new express way, the state decided to reconstruct the current road Ohrid-Sveti Naum. From the Public Enterprise for State Roads, in an interview for “Meta”, they said that by the end of 2019 the most favourable bidder for the preparation of the project documentation for the reconstruction of the road Ohrid – Sveti Naum will be selected.
– After completion of the project for reconstruction, financial means for construction will be planned as well – said officials from the Public Enterprise for State Roads.
The current Government gave up on the idea of the construction of a new expressway Ohrid-Peshtani on mountain Galichica, after UNESCO fiercely criticized the idea of constructing a road 14,5 kilometres long, through the national park itself. The Government last year reconstructed the road from Ohrid to Sveti Stefan, however the remaining part of the road towards Albania has not been renewed.
Parts of the road that are in most critical condition are near Lagadin, Eleshani and Peshtani, where the width of the lane of the road is 2,5 meters. The enormous frequency of cars, during the summer period overburdens the road, which leads to traffic jams. Busses can barley bypass each other, carless drivers park their vehicles on the road itself, and an additional problem is the damaged road.
The current road Ohrid-Pestani is one of the most busy roads in our country. According to the data from the Public Enterprise “Makedonijapat” for the frequency of vehicles using the road, the average annual daily traffic between Ohrid and Peshtani in 2017 was 8,914 vehicles, while between Peshtani and Sveti Naum the movement of vehicles was drastically lower, amounting to 1,192 vehicles per day in 2017.
