17 New Court Cases Against Journalists From the Start of This Year

The NGO Infocentar and the Media Development Center released data regarding the country’s primary courts, obtained through the free access to information of public character. In the period of two years, from November 2012 to December 2014, the nine primary courts in Macedonia (Gostivar, Veles, Strumica, Bitola, Prilep, Shtip, Tetovo, Kumanovo and Skopje 2) have received 520 insult and libel cases of which 74.4 per cent have been closed and 25.6 per cent are still in process. The overwhelming majority of cases have been filed with court in Skopje – 328 (63 per cent) and the least in Tetovo – 5 (0.96 per cent).

The release by Media Development Center writes they are concerned over the tendency of frequent and continued filing of cases against journalists. From the beginning of 2015, there had been 30 new cases filed with the primary court in Skopje, of which half – 17 (56 per cent) are slated against journalists and media.

Regarding the intensity and the length of the motions filed against journalists, in the period of January to June, 2015, there have been on average, about thirty cases and twenty hearings per month.
