Mission Impossible: Foreigners and Zvrlevski in Public Prosecution

-

“First resignation of Marko Zvrlevski, and then international experts”, is the general attitude and a condition of the opposition parties, led by the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), in connection with the invitation that the Public Prosecution submitted to the bodies of the European Union (EU) to send international experts to facilitate the work of the prosecutors in the cases “Puch” and “Wiretapping”.

– We had a clear and precise position on this issue even before the Public Prosecution take such actions, and it is first Marko Zvrlevski to resign, and then we can consider these options for international supervision. Zvrlevski has no credibility to lead the Public Prosecution – said SDSM spokesman Petre Shilegov.

Commenting the initiative of the Public Prosecution, Shilegov mentioned yesterday’s speech of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski at the forum of VMRO-DPMNE, in which he said: “Zaev demands a new prosecutor. For us it is imported the prosecutor to abide the law. I am convinced that the current prosecutor does so. However, there is such evidence against the person Z.Z., that even Vice, his brother, was the prosecutor, he would have been uncomfortable when seeing the evidence.”

– How does Gruevski know what evidence the prosecution has against Zoran Zaev? It tells us everything – said Shilegov for us.

Despite numerous attempts to ask for an explanation on the issue from the ruling VMRO-DPMNE, no one answered our phone calls.

Coalition partner from the Albanian block, Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), requests international experts not only on legal, but also for a political solution to the situation of the case “Puch” and the wiretapping scandal.

– We welcome this step of the Public Prosecution, which is in correspondence with the primary requirements of DUI, and in direction to resolve the crisis. We believe that international experts are needed not only in the legal investigative part, but political expert teams that would help and would mediate in the overcoming and resolving the current political situation in the country – stated Artan Grubi, head of the President of DUI Ali Ahmeti, for META.

Mayor of the Municipality of Centar and ex-president of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Andrej Zhernovski, last week, after meeting with the new US ambassador to the country, Jess Bailey, emphasized the position for the need for a new independent public prosecutor, and the process to be monitored from the “outside”.

– The first step, very important one, could be naming a person who will be an independent prosecutor in Macedonia. I’m sure there is support for such an idea, and the whole process can be observed from the outside for the citizens to have the impression that the entire process will be honest and I am very optimistic that is taught in this respect that we can find a solution – said Zhernovski.

University Professor Gordan Kalajdzhiev, believes that it is unlikely that the prosecution will restore confidence of the public even with such an action.

– First, the top of the prosecutor is set by people involved in the scandal, and secondly, they have already taken side and it cannot restore public confidence with such a “transparency” – stated Kalajdziev for META.

Last week, through a statement, Public Prosecution informed that it submitted “an official invitation to the authorities of the European Union to send international experts who would be familiar with the work of the public prosecutors on the actual cases.”

“This decision reflects the firm stance that prosecutors consistently comply with the law and that the public has no reason to suspect their actions. Allowing international experts to be familiar with the work of the cases is due to complete transparency in operation and removing any doubts regarding the objectivity of our actions,” reads the statement of the Public Prosecution.

Articles 106 and 107 of Constitution relate to to the work of the Public Prosecution.
