NATO: Political crisis is pushing Macedonia away from Membership with the Alliance

-

The political crisis in Macedonia is pushing the country away from its NATO membership. This was one of the conclusions in the final report from the NATO Summit which took place in Warsaw.

“Given concerns over political developments in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, which have taken the country further away from NATO values, we urge all political leaders in the country to fully implement their commitments under the Pržino Agreement of June/July 2015, as the framework for a sustainable solution to the political crisis. Acknowledging initial steps on implementation, we renew our call to all parties to engage in effective democratic dialogue and to put in place the conditions for credible elections, strengthening the rule of law, media freedom, and judicial independence”,  says the report.

In its conclusions, the report repeats its views from the Bucharest Summit in 2008, that Macedonia will be invited for membership of the Alliance, as soon as the issues surrounding the name are resolved.

“We therefore strongly urge intensified efforts to find a solution to the name issue. We encourage further efforts to develop good neighbourly relations. We also encourage the building of a fully functioning multi-ethnic society based on full implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement”, concludes the report from the Summit.
