MRTV must have institutional autonomy

-

The key task of public service broadcaster is to be a space that will allow representation of different identities and finding their common connecting elements. The ideal model of public broadcasting service must be based and operate according to certain principles. It is universality, diversity, variety or recognition, quality, accountability, as well as institutional autonomy and editorial independence, which are the most important principles. This was the conclusion of the debate on the document for public policy “From MRT to independent public broadcasting service in Macedonia”, whose author is communications expert Klime Babunovski.

Journalist Santa Argirova, Snezhana Trpevska of the School of Journalism, communications experts Sefer Tahiri and Klime Babunovski, president of the Association of Journalists of Macedonia (AJM), Naser Selmani and Dragan Antonovski of Independent Union of Journalists and Media Workers participated in the discussion dedicated to the need for an independent public broadcasting service in Macedonia.

Journalist Santa Argirovska emphasized that, in the report of the European Commission, there is a serious concern for the Government’s control over the media.

– Analysis of the program of MRTV indicates that in some situations, the public broadcasting service is placed in the role of a direct actor and propaganda tool for the Government. There are almost no debates and public debate on key issues is not encouraged – said Argirovska.

Members of the program board of MRT, the director of MRTV Marijan Cvetkovski and editor-in-chief of the news program Goran Petrovski were also invited to the debate, but they didn’t attend.
