MFA held a session due to the debt of Macedonia towards the UN

-

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently holds a meeting for the newly developed situation with the debt towards the United Nations. Namely, our country’s right to vote at the General Assembly of the United Nations is revoked because of a debt amounting to 24,606 US dollars, reads the letter which was sent on 12th of January by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, reports “radio Mof“. This action is in accordance with Article 19 of the UN Charter.

The countries that lost their right to vote are Grenada, Kyrgyzstan, Guinea, Rwanda, Somalia and Yemen.

“Member of the United Nations, which is late in paying their financial contributions to the organization, cannot vote at the General Assembly if the amount of debt is equal to or greater than the amount of the contributions due from the member for the preceding two full years. However, the General Assembly may allow such a country to vote if the failure to pay is due to conditions beyond the control of the country,” reads the letter.

The right to vote of these countries will be returned after they pay the full amount of the membership fee.

The Liberal Party reacted to this, saying that “superficiality of the politicized administration and the reluctance to the foreign policy of the Government of VMRO-DPMNE is obviously experiencing its peak.”

– We believe that we mustn’t remind that the debt must be paid immediately. A gypsum board less in baroque project “Skopje 2014″ would be enough to settle the debt. If not, we believe that MPs will give up at least one business trip per year,” reads the announcement of the Liberal Party.
