The Ministry for Foreign Affairs translated the statement Minister Nikola Poposki gave in an interview to the Hungarian weekly, “Figel“. According to the MFA, Mr Poposki had said:
“Obviously, we also need some kind of physical protection to reduce illegal border activity. It is difficult to achieve in such a short time, and is not a long term solution.
If we take seriously what Europe requires of us, then there will be need for it. Whether it will be soldiers, or a fence or a combination of the two, I have to emphasize, we do not consider this a good solution to this current crisis. ”
The reaction from the MFA comes a day after foreign media published a statement by Mr Popovski that Macedonia was considering raising a fence on its border with Greece.
Approximately 7,600 migrants, mostly refugees from Syria crossed into Macedonia in the last 24 hours, said a representative from UNHCR in Macedonia.
“We have information from our Greek colleagues that buses are on route, which means they will come and continue to come,” said Alexandra Kraus, a UNHCR representative who resides on the Greek border.
