Memeti: Institutions are reluctant to implement rules

-

Institutions in Macedonia are reluctant to enforce regulations and laws to deal with challenges to resolve problems and this is the main problem, says Ombudsman, Idzet Memeti, in an interview with “Radio Free Europe“.

“We in the Republic of Macedonia, in a parliamentary democracy have established a Special Public Prosecutor, and this says a lot about what level we are on. This shows how much will the institutions have to cope with the challenges and problems which need to be solved. We as a society allowed an outside body to come and outline how we should act, which is an extremely bad sign or a bad state of society called parliamentary democracy, “said Memeti.

In connection with the refugee crisis and the new measures for selection and profiling of migrants, the Ombudsman considers that from the beginning of the migrant crisis in Macedonia, the country violated the principles of the International Declaration on Refugees of non-discrimination, impunity and not to return them to places where they may be harmed.

When asked specifically on his thoughts of Macedonia’s decision to only let the refugees from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan in, but not those who come from countries that are not affected by wars, Memeti said he did not know whether such a decision was formally made, but if it is, he says it has to “be to explained on a thorough level.”
