Slight movement at the Serbian-Croatian border

-

At the border crossing Bajakovo there has been slight movement in the column trucks, as trucks carrying perishable and dangerous goods are being let through.

“There has been minimal movement, trucks carrying fresh goods or merchandise that is dangerous for the environment are slowly being let through. To be exact, those vehicles according to law, can not remain still. Moving them is difficult because they have to be removed from the column and a separate lane must be formed for them, and this is a slow process”, said Biljana Muratovska from the Association of Carriers “Macao-trance”.

The Customs Administration of Serbia said yesterday that at the border crossing Batrovci, loaded and heavy trucks were the cause of the 15 km long column of vehicles.

“Many of them can not change direction and turn back, because conditioned by international transport licenses and laws, they are required to move in one direction”, said in a statement from the authorities.

Deputy Economy Minister Christian Delev said that Macedonian authorities responded and pointed out to the Croatian authorities, that “the situation is not in accordance to international agreements of the flow of people and goods.”

“In addition to informing the institutions in Brussels and CEFTA, we are in contact with our colleagues in Serbia, Kosovo, Albania and Turkey, who all are affected by this issue”, said Mr Delev.

The repercussions from trucks being blocked at the border for a several days who carrying fresh goods, are yet to be determined. Meanwhile, Macedonian companies are in fear of loosing contracts with their foreign partners.

Macedonian transporters transporting seasonal fruit and vegetables to Europe, are stuck at the border crossing from Serbia to Croatia after Zagreb closed the border because of the refugee crisis.

There are about 1,000 trucks waiting to enter and exit at the border crossings Batrovci and Bajakovo, due to these numbers, they are completely blocked and cars are being diverted to other border crossings.
