Kukan: Boycotting Parliament has become a popular sport in the Balkans

-

“The boycott of Parliament is turning into a kind of sport in the Balkan region, but the country’s political debates need to be carried out in Parliament”, said MEP Eduard Kukan, at yesterday’s conference in European Parliament called “The crisis of democracy in the Western Balkans”.

Talking about the political situation in Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo, Kukan said that nobody in the European Union likes the boycott.
Kukan condemned the growing nationalism in the region, and said it was being used by various politicians to attract voters.

“The shadow from the past do not help and the enlargement process will become more difficult in the years to come”, added Kukan.

Among the panel members was special rapporteur for Albania, Knut Fleckenstein, who pointed out that democracy in the Balkans has been damaged, and because of this, it allows leaders to rule autocratically.
