Representatives from five journalists’ and media organizations today had a meeting with the President of the country Gjorge Ivanov, who discussed the possibility of resuming talks on media reforms before the election.
They, as stated in a statement, told Ivanov that without fully implemented media reforms in Macedonia there will be no conditions for free and credible elections.
“Representatives of the organizations informed the President that during the next week will submit an initiative for amendments to the Law on audio and audiovisual media services to members of Parliament, as an introduction to the comprehensive and thorough reforms in the media system. The purpose of the amendments to the law is to provide an independent and professional regulator, an institutional with autonomy and editorial independence from MRT, and to reduce high fines to the media. Also, it is necessary to prohibit government advertising in the media”, the statement said.
