Ivanov astray between perception and reality: Numbers, competencies, activities and expectations

-

President Gjorgje Ivanov again took center stage in yesterday’s interview on TV “Telma”. Social networks exploded, emphasizing his gaffes and comparing them with those of the past.

However, it opens the dilemma what are the powers, duties, and of course, responsibilities of the President in Macedonia.

Figures and competences:

For the institution President of the Republic of Macedonia, more than one million euros, i.e. 1,154,308 euros, were allocated from this year’s state budget.

According to the Constitution, however, the competences of the President are:

  • He awards the mandate for composition of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia;
  • He appoints and dismisses ambassadors and representatives of the Republic of Macedonia abroad by decree;
  • He receives the credentials and letters of recall of foreign diplomatic representatives;
  • He proposes two judges of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Macedonia;
  • He proposes two members of the Judicial Council;
  • He appoints three members of the Security Council of the Republic of Macedonia;
  • He proposes members of the Council for international relations;
  • He appoints and dismisses other holders of state and public office determined by the Constitution and law;
  • He grants decorations and honors in accordance with the law;
  • He provides pardons in accordance with the law and performs other duties determined by the Constitution.

Activities:

These are just some of the recent activities of the President published on his web page:

What citizens expect:

Although, as he says, he has very little authority, the citizens expect from the president much more than what he is currently doing.

  • To represent their interests;
  • To be a corrective for the governing party;
  • To mediate during crisis.
