The President of Macedonia Gjorge Ivanov welcomed the agreement of the political leaders reached in mediation of Commissioner Johannes Hahn and the MEPs Eduard Kukan, Ivo Vajgl and Richard Howitt.
– I expect the political climate to normalize as soon as possible, and to restore full commitment to European integration of Macedonia. Precisely in this area we will be challenged for what we need unity, mutual trust and cooperation. Therefore, the European agenda must again be the first priority on the agenda in the country – said Ivanov.
According to Ivanov, comes a period when the institutions will have to demonstrate their capacity and willingness to cope with everything that is located on the Euro-Atlantic path. He told the political parties to seriously understand the role they play in the society and to analyze the consequences of all their actions and inaction.
Ivanov thanked the representatives of the European Commission and on the European Parliament as well as the ambassadors of the EU and of USA, who were involved in the negotiations to resolve the crisis.
– With the reached agreement we all recognizes the European power of unification. I ask for the European Council to evaluate the demonstrated constructiveness of the political leaders and as soon as possible to make a decision to start accession negotiations with the European Union as an important condition for the resumption of Macedonia’s European integration and democratization, but also as a dam to prevent this and similar crises in the future – said Ivanov.
The President stressed that the return of citizens’ trust in state institutions is crucial to Macedonia’s democracy and stated that the absence of dialogue and disrespect of the institutions are in the base of each crisis that we have had so far.
