The indecisiveness of the European Union and NATO to unblock the path for Macedonia’s integration was a major reason for the political crisis in Macedonia, which culminated this year.
This, among other things, was said by President Gjorgi Ivanov during a panel discussion dedicated to the enlargement of the European Union at the Congress of the Pan European Union in Vienna.
“The Union’s indecisiveness to overcome roadblocks and the fatigue process of enlargement has lead to retrograde processes in South East Europe. Instead of the Europeanization of the Balkans, the European Union has Balkanized. Now it is time for the European Union to re-Europeanize itself, and with them, the Balkans”, said Ivanov.
He assessed that in the Balkans, there is again retrograde processes, and the rhetoric between the Balkan states is intensifying. He added that due to the fatigue process of enlargement, the attractive appeal of the Union has declined.
