Hahn in Gevgelija: Next week we will discuss new aid for Macedonia

-

EU Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, arrived this morning in Gevgelija, visiting the refugee reception centre in Gevgelija, where he met with Syrian refugees.

– On Monday, representatives from the European Commission and experts from your country will assess the situation, to identify needs for additional financial support, equipment and human resources to effectively deal with this crisis. It is crucial that Macedonia and the rest of the region receives help. Last week I proposed a reallocation of funds from Turkey totaling $ 1.5 billion for the countries of the region like Macedonia to cope with the situation – said Commissioner Hahn.

Commissioner Hahn commended Macedonian authorities on handling the refugee crisis. He arrived in Gevgelija together with EU Ambassador to Macedonia, Aivo Orav, Interior Minister Mitko Chavkov and the Director of the Public Security Bureau, Goranco Savovski.

6,000 migrants and refugees daily transit through Macedonia, where approximately 80% of them are from Syria, fleeing civil war.
