Hahn: Elections in December is a good step, but it is just the beginning

-

European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, before tomorrow’s visit to Macedonia, said it is  “important that the conditions for holding credible elections are met”.

As reported by the European Commission, the main purpose of Commissioner Hahn’s visit, is to review and examine political developments and to discuss further steps, including the organization of early parliamentary elections scheduled for December and the implementation of the urgent reform priorities, which, as stated, are crucial.

Commissioner Hahn, who will be meeting with Prime Minister Emil Dimitriev, the leaders of the four main political parties, as well as the Special Prosecutor and representatives from the civil sector, said that he is looking forward to his visit to Skopje.

“The agreement reached last summer by all the major political parties and setting the date for elections this December, was a good step. However, this is only the beginning. It is important that the conditions for credible elections are fully met and that citizens can freely participate in them”, said Hahn.

The Commissioner said that during the visit he would meet with all the main political figures, including the Special Public Prosecutor, Katica Janeva and representatives from the civil sector, where they will discuss how to speed up the implementation of the urgent reform priorities for the rule of law.

“It is especially important for the state to make sustainable progress towards the EU. I look forward to hearing from the Special Prosecutor and the progress of her offices work and what challenges they are facing”, said Hahn.
