The Ministry of Education is preparing a project to success the project “A Computer for Every Child”. This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Education and Science Petar Atanasov for “Meta” who says that it is necessary to digitize the curriculum, enabling students to learn from modern tools.
“It’s a big change that has to happen. I do not have specific information at this time such as when we would buy new computers for students, but we will work to digitize the curriculum. This involves providing more resources, equipping schools to digitize, and enabling students to learn from modern tools. Just like the last government, we have a desire to implement this process, but it can not be completed straight away,” says Atanasov.
Currently, students in the country either do not even use computers while at school, or they use what remains functional from the equipment purchased in the “A Computer for Every Child” project.
In the absence of equipment for the realization of computer classes and the realization of information technology, in many schools the policy is “bring your own device”, so children bring a laptop, a smartphone or a tablet from home.
Tome Spirovski, the Director of the State Education Inspectorate told us, only one third of the computers are functional and used in class, because others are either significantly damaged or completely out of use.
Computers from the project “A Computer for Every Child” were procured in 2007. This project was harshly criticized by the then opposition claiming it was unsuccessful and that it was a money laundering project.
It was never revealed exactly how much the state spent regarding this project.
