The world internet-giant “Google”, in its application “Maps” renamed the big Macedonia Square into Vardarska Square, in Skopje.
When searching for companies that have branches or headquarters in the centre of Skopje, Google maps shows where they are located and the name of the location. For easier navigation, especially for tourists, the location names are given in both, Macedonian and English language.
Last year, in July, “Google” enabled users to share and edit locations so they could improve the application “Maps” and they could mark unmarked sites. However, locations do not appear on the map automatically, but they’re waiting for the maps to be verified by more users. It’s most likely, that the English version of Macedonia Square has been inserted by a user, and then, with the verification from other users and without supervision from “Google”, the same one was inscribed in the map of Skopje.
According to last year’s information, more that a billion people used “Google Maps” and everybody had the opportunity to edit and contribute to help develop the application.
