‘Eurobarometer’: Macedonians have more faith in the EU, than they do in their own Government and Parliament

Macedonians have more faith in the European Union, than they do in Macedonian institutions such as Parliament and the Government shows a survey by the ‘Standard Eurobarometer’ carried out by the European Commission in the member states and in the five candidate countries, Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Turkey and Macedonia.

According to the survey, 58% of Macedonians have confidence in the EU, which is 25% more confidence from the citizens of the 28 member states of the EU. Mistrust of the national Parliaments and national governments are almost identical. A total of 64% of Macedonians do not trust Parliament, where 28% do. In EU countries, the percentage of trust in national governments is 68%, while 65% do not trust their governments.

In Macedonia, 62% of the population, according to the survey do not trust the government, and only 30% of the population trust them. In EU countries, the percentage of mistrust towards national governments is 68%, where 27% have faith in their governments.

Regarding the economic situation, 35% of surveyed Macedonians believe that the situation is the same as last year, and another 35% believe that the economic situation is worse. Only 23% believe that the situation has progressed in the last 12 months. The analysis shows that this year the number of people who believe that the economic situation is the same as last year has decreased, where as the number of people who believe the situation is worse, has increased.

The analysis also showed that the biggest problems which Macedonians face are the financial well-being in the family home, unemployment, and living conditions, while citizens of the EU believe their biggest problems are growing prices, pensions, and even unemployment.

The survey states that they are most concerned with the fact that 48% of Macedonians believe the worst is yet to come in the labour market. The highest percentage of young people, under the age of 21, who are still studying, hope that when their time comes, the situation in the labour market will be better.
