EU calls for an emergency meeting to discuss the refugee crisis

-

The European Union called for an emergency meeting where its member states will discuss the escalation of the migrant crisis, reports the BBC.

According to information the EU presidency has called the foreign ministers of all 28 member states to a meeting on September 14. The EU’s announcement states that the crisis has reached “unprecedented proportions”.

“The situation of migration phenomena outside and inside the European Union has recently taken unprecedented proportions,” says in the announcement,

The decision to call an emergency meeting announced by Luxembourg, the country currently holding the presidency of the EU, came after hundreds of refugees drowned in the Mediterranean in their attempt to reach Europe and after 70 people suffocated and died in a trailer in Austria. In addition to these tragedies is the inflow of migrants who pass through the so called Balkan route.

According to reports by the EU agency Frontex, more than 100,000 migrants have reached the borders of EU countries.

From the United Nations they say the conflict in Syria is the main cause of the increase of the number of refugees and migrants.
