EU continues to sanction Russia until September

-

Last night, at an extraordinary meeting of heads of diplomacies of 28 member states, European Union decided to continue the sanctions on Russia until September, announced EU High Representative Federica Mogherini.

Serious debate among most member states and the minority led by Greece, which opposed their continuance, preceded the voting for the continuation of sanctions, which were projected to end in March this year.

US welcomes the extension of sanctions that include 132 Russian and Ukrainian officials, who are prohibited from traveling to the EU, and 85 companies and banks, which have been denied access to the European market. New sanctions are due to worsening of the situation in Eastern Ukraine and Russia’s refusal to respect the agreement of Minsk.

– We achieved a consensus – Mogherini said, adding that the European Commission is obliged to prepare a list with names for the “black list” of the EU, for which the ministers will meet again in early February.

Several countries, including the Baltic countries and Poland, were in favor for a much broader approach that includes broader sanctions against Russian businessmen. However, this consensus was not achieved for this.

Before the meeting, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Antanas Linkevičius announced that the leadership of the self-proclaimed republics Donetsk and Lugansk should be put on the list of terrorist organizations, and Russia to be condemned for the aggression against Ukraine.

Mogherini announced that the heads of state and government of the EU, which will meet on 12th of February in Brussels, will again review the situation on the field and the introduction of new restrictive measures against Russia.
