EU “deeply concerned” about Macedonia, an investigation regarding the “bombs” is requested

-

Council of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs adopted conclusions that expressed deep concern about the deteriorating situation in Macedonia, especially in the area of rule of law, fundamental rights and freedom of the media, which are core values at the heart of the EU and its enlargement policy.

In the interest of citizens, democracy, the rule of law and political stability, the Council urges the political leaders to quickly respond to these problems.

Ministers today said that all countries should take their responsibility and take steps towards a sustainable solution, to constructively engage in political dialogue and to restore confidence in the institutions through appropriate political measures.

The European Union requires all allegations to be investigated.

That investigation, say ministers, should take place with full respect and through a fair process, according to the principle of independence and the presumption of innocence.

Ministers welcomed the efforts of the European Parliament for mediation in the dialogue between the government and opposition and require both sides to show restraint and to focus on finding a solution to the crisis.

Macedonia remains on the agenda of the European Union until there is a solution to the difficult political situation in the country and ministers will again return to this topic in the following months.
