“Ericsson” contradicts Chavkov: We are not the owners, nor do we operate the equipment for wiretapping

-

“Ericsson” is not the owner, nor is the operator of the equipment for lawful interception of communications, said a statement today,  sent by the Swedish company.

The company confirmed that on October 19, they received a request from the Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPO), for technical assistance in an investigation the SPO had been conducting against the Administration of Security and Counterintelligence (UBK), but would not disclose more details or any further information related to the investigation conducted by the SPO.

“Ericsson, confirms that on October 19, 2016, they received a request from the Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPO), following the issuing of a court order from the Basic Court Skopje 1, for technical assistance in an investigation regarding the mechanics of the legal interception of communications. ‘Ericsson’ directs all inquiries for further information concerning this investigation,  to the Special Public Prosecution’s Office, Skopje concerning the case. The lawful interception of communications is mandatory and is a standard function in public networks of telephones and telecom operators. Countries worldwide are obliged to provide such functionality for local authorities.’Ericsson’, as a manufacturer of telephone systems and equipment, is also a manufacturer of systems for lawful interception. ‘Ericsson’ is not the owner of this equipment, and does not operate the equipment for the lawful interception of communications”, said a statement from the company.

The Director of the Public Security Bureau, Mitko Chavkov, on Wednesday, after the SPO had entered UBK premises armed with two court orders, argued that the systems are not owned by the Interior Ministry (MOI) or the UBK, but are in fact, owned by the operator and, as such, only an authorized individual can access that system.

“They (SPO) really want to create the perception that someone inside UBK is purposely obstructing their investigation, but from the system itself, they realized that they could not extract any data or export data. The system is not owned by the Ministry of Interior, or the UBK, the operator is the owner and only an authorized individual from that operator can access that system. They were then convinced of this and sent a letter to the operator, namely, “Ericsson”, in an attempt to gain authorization so their representative in Macedonia could gain access to the system, which again, I shall repeat, is not owned by UBK, meaning it is not owned by the Ministry of Interior, it is owned and administered by the operator”, stated Chavkov at the time.
