Digital products more expensive in the EU from 1st of January

-

On 1st of January, the new tax rules in the European Union, which harmonize VAT throughout the community and which will make products more expensive for the consumer, came into force.

As of this year, VAT of digital products – such as legal downloading music or movies, e-books, digital applications, etc. – will be paid in the country where you purchased the product, rather than the supplier country, as it was the case before 1st of January 2015.

With this, the European Union hopes to prevent large digital companies like Amazon, Google or Apple to direct its European production toward countries with low rate of VAT, such as Luxembourg, which creates unfair competition between EU member-states.

Companies like Amazon responded that they will raise the price of the products because of this.

Luxembourg will still receive 1.1 billion euros from the other 27 member states as compensation for lost income caused by the new European rule.
