Nine people arrested in the raid codenamed “Cell” ; The police is searching for additional 27

The aftermath of the raid in which thirty locations were searched throughout Macedonia is nine arrested and 36 placed on suspect list. The raid codenamed Cell that was launched by the special forces of the Ministry of Interior took place this morning. Its purpose was to detain people responsible of enticing Macedonian citizens to join paramilitary formations in the fighting that is taking place in Syria and the Middle East region.

The Minister of Interior Mitko Chavkov reported at a press conference that operation Cell was being prepared since September, 2014.
– Based on an order from the Public prosecutorhip for organized crime and corruption, the MVR worked on collecting material evidence, between September 2014 until July 2015, on Macedonian citizens who are actively participating in organizing and preparing individuals to join paramilitary ranks outside of the territory of Republic of Macedonia- said Chavkov.
According to the Minister, the action started last night at 3:30 AM. Based on an order given by a judge at an earlier process, there were 28 searches of which 21 were conducted on domestic residences and the rest in other objects in Skopje, four in Gostivar, one in Tetovo, Kumanovo and Struga.

– Part of the four objects were the internet café Fastnet in Skopje and the adjoining objects of the Tutunsuz mosque, as well as the non-government organizations “Iskra na milosta” (Spark of compassion) and “Islamska Mladina” (Islamic Youth) in the village Saraj on the west end of the capitol. Nine people were detained in the action. 27 individuals are sought after by the police. According to operative findings by the MVR, twenty more people are currently fighting in the Middle East- mainly in Syria- said Chavkov.
The raids yielded 38 desktop computers, 18 laptops, 18 tablets, 119 cell phones, lots of SIM cards and card holders, six hard drives, 45 memory sticks, compression gun, tactical vest, foreign currency, passports, receipts for Western Union money transfers and other items.

– The inventory of items which were taken by the police will be investigated by the Department of Criminal Technology to search for further evidence. Following the investigation an official report will be submitted to the Public prosecutor in the Organized Crime and Corruption office. From the available evidence the prosecutorship launched criminal charges against 35 persons from Skopje, Tetovo, Kumanovo, Gostivar and Struga for the illegal participation in foreign armies, police departments, paramilitary or militia formations, according to clause 322 from the Criminal code – said minister Chavkov, adding that MVR, in coordination with the public prosecutor in charge for this activity, is going to “continue to undertake measures and activities aimed at finding out additional persons who have been involved in illegal activities of this kind.”
