The new head of the State Election Commission (SEC) Oliver Derkoski, in a statement to MIA says that the Commission’s first action will be its constitution, and then the implementation of the referendum for the name. Derkoski, who will be heading the commission after being proposed by the opposition VMRO-DPMNE, says that SEC members can not take political stances in the current situation, and should respect the laws and the Constitution.
“The first step of the new Commission will be to hold a constitutional session of the SEC and then as the body that will be conducting the upcoming referendum, we will have to take the first steps in that direction. I hope that we will be able to respond to the assigned task in accordance with the Constitution and the positive legal regulations that are necessary,” says the new president of the SEC.
Regarding the activities surrounding the referendum, Derkoski says that in accordance with the Law on Referendums, the authorized nominator, in this case, Parliament, should make the necessary decision on a referendum, and then SEC operatively, in accordance with Article 31 of the Law on Referendums, to assume its responsibilities for the organization and technical preparation of the referendum itself, ie implementation of Parliament’s decision.
Derkovski says that no matter what VMRO-DPMNE’s position, he and all other members of the SEC are members of a state body that has certain tasks, powers and responsibilities.
