Corridor 10’s Intelligent Transportation System: This year a call for a tender, next year it will be put into use

-

The Economic Reform Programme 2021-2023 that was adopted by the Government of North Macedonia is determining precisely the dynamics of the implementation of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) at the highway along Corridor 10, a project that Meta.mk has been reporting about at length. This year, the practical implementation will have to be accelerated through issuing a call for an international tender for the construction of the Intelligent Transportation System (Communication-Information control system and traffic management).

At the same time, the adopted Programme states that in 2021 a contract will be signed with the ITS’ contractor at Corridor 10 including a contract with the company that will be supervising the works. The equipment installation and the surveillance over the operations will start towards the end of 2021 and the whole project should be put into use during 2022.

The ITS implementation should allow for the traffic safety along the highway from Tabanovce to Gevgelija to be increased through the introduction of control and informing the drivers of weather conditions, traffic jams, controling the transport of dangerous matters, but also assesing the traffic density and the weight of the transport vehicles.

With the project which is worth 18.6 million EUR, the highway between Tabanovce and Gevgelija will have installed devices for measuring the weight of the vehicles in movement, weather stations – systems for providing information about weather conditions on the road and for measuring greenhouse gasses, surveillance cameras will be installed, as well as SOS road telephones and electronic traffic signalization for informing the drivers about the road conditions. At the same time, all of these parameters about the road conditions will be monitored by the Public Enterprise for State Roads’ Control Center.

“The biggest impact is expected to happen in the increase of security and saving time when traveling. The total time for traveling will be decreased as a result of the coordination of the timely information system for the road users along Corridor 10. Due to the early warnings about potential delays on part of the system, the time saving will allow the users to decrease their road expenditures and as a result Corridor 10 will be more competitive for use especially when it comes to international transportation. The companies that are conducting transportation activities will have fewer expenditures and decreased transportation time,” states the Economic Reforms Programme 2021-2023 about the gains from the implementation of the Intelligent Transportation System.

Else, the implementation of this communication-information system for traffic control and management at Corridor 10 was delayed for several years. In its press release, the Government stated that the projects in the Economic Reforms Programme 2021-2023 are an obligation and are part of the reforms in accordance with the Euro-integration process. This document has to be submitted to the European Commission by the end of January.
