Brussels won’t comment on whether they’re considering sanctions due to the obstruction of the SPO

-

The European Commission today repeated their previous stance that the Special Prosecutor’s Office is a key part of the Pržino Agreement, signed by all the leaders of the main political parties.

However, for now, Brussels do not yet wish to comment on whether they will take tougher measures or sanctions due to the obstruction of the work of the SPO, nor how will it affect Macedonia’s upcoming progress report.

“The European Commission has the same opinion and viewpoint as last week”, stated the Commission to “Meta”.

Last week, Brussels reminded political leaders that they all had repeatedly committed to supporting the SPO’s work, without obstruction or interference.

“The EU strongly encourages all institutions in the country to act in accordance with these clear obligations and to fully respect the legal position of the SPO. The EU has stressed the importance of the legal and political applications for the wiretapping and the content which arose from it. Solving these serious problems which arose from the recording are crucial to returning the country to the Euro-Atlantic path and returning confidence to the citizens”, read the statement from Brussels.

Earlier, diplomats in Brussels said that this year, Macedonia will receive a conditional recommendation so a date can be granted to start negotiations and that in the report, a milder vocabulary will be used, not to give the impression that the EU wants to influence election results in the country. However, the report will mention remarks on the implementation of the urgent reform priorities, the rule of law and the work of the SPO.
