The Przhino Agreement is alive, but a lot of work remains to be done, said the US Ambassador to Macedonia, Jess Baily for “Deutsche Welle“.
“Its fundamental elements – accountability for the wiretapping scandal, an inclusive political process, especially for Parliament, and reforms which lead to credible elections – this remains the best way out of the current political crisis and integration into the EU and NATO. Nobody said that implementing the Agreement would be easy. Indeed there were many delays and obstructions. However, one year later, the SPO are investigating the intercepted calls and allegations of serious abuse arising from these conversations. An independent SEC was founded and reforms to the Electoral Code were introduced. Many have told me that citizens are now more consistent in their demands from their leaders to fulfill their obligations under the Przhino Agreement”, Ambassador Baily said.
He added that the pardons must be revoked clearly and comprehensively, and the SPO must be able to carry out their work without interference or obstructions.
“The Government must show commitment to pluralist democracy and the reforms from the Przhino Agreement. This means deeds, not just words. That means the participation of the opposition, civil society’s stance and the introduction of a real system which will run checks and balance within Government structures. Without responsibility, without reforms and without credible elections, Macedonia will remain trapped in this crisis, with a damaged reputation. Nobody wants that”, said the Ambassador.
