Army personnel in North Macedonia will have to choose – uniform or politics!

-

Army or civilian personnel in the Army of the Republic of North Macedonia will not be allowed to manage, represent or act on behalf of a political party or to be members of any party bodies. With their party membership they mustn’t bring into question their professionalism, impartiality and the lawfullness while conducting their duties in the Army or the Defense Ministry. These are some of the proposed amendments of the Army Service Regulation Law that the Government will propose to the Parliament.

The amendment arrives after an initiative by the Security Council and President Stevo Pendarovski, after a high ranking army officer became a member of a high ranking party body and on several occasions had a public speeches representing his party.

The legal amendments will not delve into the constitutionally guaranteed right to be a member of a political party. The army personnel can be political party founders but not party officials or members of political bodies.

Similar legal limitation already exists in the Law on Internal Affairs, that was adopted in 2009 and was copied in the Law on Internal Affairs dated from 2014, but that version bans any the personnel to participate in founding of a politica party.
