Analysis: 40% of Youth in North Macedonia claim that corruption motivates them to leave the country

Every 4 out of 10 young people in North Macedonia stated they would leave the country because of the degree of corruption while each third young person has noted that corruption is the primary motivation to engage and contribute to the fight against corruptive activities, new analysis by the Youth Alliance – Krushevo shows.

440 young people participated in the analysis, out of whom 64% have stated that so far, they have never taken part directly in any kind of corruptive activities. Still, 4% consider that the situation with the corruption in the country is making them become a part of its chain.

The general evaluation of the fight against corruption by the respondents is 2 on a scale from 1 to 5.

When asked how they are identifying the corruption, the largest percentage of young respondents replied that it represents “money in the Index book for the professor” (57%), 1/3 stated that for them corruption is being employed because you’re a member of a political party, and the smallest percentage stated that corruption means “coffee and candies for the doctor” (7%) or “gifts in the amount of 1,000 MKD (3%).

According to the results, 57% stated that what mostly bothers them is the corruption in the judiciary, for 27% its the corruption in the healthcare system, 18% in the state administration, and 7% that its corruption in the police.

The analysis has shown that half of the Youth find it important that leaders be decisive, only 15% find it important for them to be transparent, and 6% wish the leaders to be more authoritative.

“According to this analysis, corruption represents one of the biggest problems that young people notice and part of the solution is the complete dedication toward building a transparent society. The promotion of youth activity and raising the voice of the Youth is our main goal in the accomplishment of this project,” said Anelija Mitrova from the Youth Alliance- Krushevo.
