Accusations that the United States was involved in a plot to destabilize Macedonia are absurd, stated the US Embassy in Skopje for “Nova TV“.
The reaction of the US Embassy is related to the recent statement of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who accused the West of being behind the current political crisis in the country and putting pressure on Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski.
– Recent accusations that the United States or some US organizations are involved in a plot to destabilize Macedonia are absurd. The United States wants peace and stability in Macedonia as part of our current goal – “a whole, free and peaceful Europe.” Macedonian citizens and their leaders want to join the EU and NATO, knowing that it is the best way for safe and prosperous Macedonia. We fully agree with it – reads the statement of the US Embassy.
Three days ago, during his address to the Council of the Russian Federation, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov said that the pressure the West exerts on Macedonian Prime Minister is behind Gruevski’s refusal to impose sanctions on Russia and support for the gas pipeline project “Southern Stream” and now, “Turkish Stream”.
– Efforts are made for Gruevski’s government to be accused of not fulfilling obligations to the people, but behind it, in fact, lays the desire to put pressure on his refusal to join the sanctions against Russia and the support for “Southern Stream” and readiness for cooperation in the implementation of alternatives to transport of fuel, including the so-called “Turkish stream”. It is very sad and dangerous that efforts were made to use the Albanian factor for that purpose. Many years ago, there were serious conflicts and then (in 2001) Ohrid agreement was signed, and now it is said that Macedonia should federalize even further, even proposing ideas to be divided so that part is to be given to Albania and another to Bulgaria. It is obvious that the Macedonian events are controlled from the outside – said Lavrov.
