Alojz Peterle hopes that the tensions decrease and an agreement among party leaders is reached

-

Alojz Peterle, member of European Parliament from Slovenia, member of European Peoples Party and chairmen of the parliamentary EU-Macedonia committee today called that a clear separation is established between party and state lines and that the rule of law is fully respected, especially in the politically highly sensitive case, referring to the charges brought against Mr Zoran Zaev.

– The charges brought against Mr Zoran Zaev, leader of the opposition Social Democratic Party,  on undermining constitutional order in Macedonia, are not favoring a prompt resumption of the already high tensions between the main political parties. For the sake of the well-being of democracy, I hope that the tensions decrease and an agreement among party leaders is finally reached at political level in order to restore a fully represented and fully functioning national assembly. Regarding the recent charges to the opposition leader, I urge all stakeholders in Macedonia that the separation of democratic powers and institutions is respected, that investigations are carried by the judiciary in a clear, independent and transparent way, and that  a clear separation is established between party and state lines. It is of utmost importance for the credibility of Macedonia  that the rule of law is fully respected, especially in this politically highly sensitive case – read the reaction of Peterle.
