A busy February – The month with five key political dates

-

The fulfilment of five deadlines expected this month, by politicians, working groups and institutions responsible for conducting elections.

  • On February 2 (tomorrow) the working groups should hold a meeting with Belgian facilitator Peter Vanhoutte, where VMRO-DPMNE should deliver their final answer on whether they accept the proposals from SDSM, and the opposition to withdraw all their remarks on the methodology on the cleansing of the voters’ list, if the ruling party accepts the proposals from the International Community for reform with the media.
  • From 15 – 18 February EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn is expected to arrive, who will have to check how far the implementation of the reforms are coming along and whether there are conditions for fair and democratic elections.
  • By February 19 the SEC should be provided with the necessary personnel and finance. As for the voters list, it must be completed with initial cross-checking of relevant databases to get a better picture of how extensive the cleansing process will be, including random spot checks. This is one of the criteria the EU and US Ambassadors Aivo Orav and Jess Bailey submitted to the Interim Prime Minister Emil Dimitriev who will be conducting the elections,
  • On February 20, Ambassadors will consult with local and international experts and will assess whether there are conditions for credible elections.
  • On February 24, if all the numerous criteria are met, then will come into force the decision made by VMRO-DPMNE, DUI and DPA about delaying the dissolution of Parliament.

The election is scheduled to take place on April 24.
