There is a new impulse for solving the name dispute, said Nimetz

-

The UN’s Special Envoy for the name dispute between Greece and Macedonia, Matthew Nimetz, remarked that there is a “new impulse” in the efforts for finding a solution for the problem.

“After years of parliamentary dead-ends, we have a new government in Skopje, which wants to reactivate its foreign policy in the region, and obviously, the name issue is an important impediment to the path to European integration, to NATO membership. So this is a high issue on their agenda and I think therefore there is a new impulse”, said Nimetz in an interview for the Independent Balkan News Agency (IBNA) which happened after the meeting with the head of the Greek diplomacy, Nikos Kotsias.

When asked about future decisions, the mediator said that in the following next months he shall be in contact with both sides and that a plan will be developed how to move the negotiations forward.

He repeated that he hasn’t given any proposals and that now is the time to talk about the basic concepts before any proposals are suggested.

Nimetz, who during the last month’s visit to Skopje said that people shouldn’t expect any drastic changes in the next few months because now is not the right time for final proposals.
