The latest from the EBU on “Eurovision 2018”: Macedonia is ‘out’, but it is working on getting ‘in’

-

After last week’s announcement that due to debts, Macedonia will not be allowed to participate in the selection of the “Eurovision 2018” song contest from the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) said the EBU for “ESC Today“. They said that they hope to find a joint solution with MRT.

“Of course we hope that a solution can be found for MRT to be included in the Eurovision song contest in 2018. To achieve this, we are working together with MRT and RTP (Portuguese Radio and Television). If we find a solution, the EBU will inform in due time”, said Jon Ola Sand, the Executive Director of the EBU.

Yesterday, Portuguese Radio and Television and the EBU released a list of participants in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018, however, Macedonia was not on that list..

On the official “Eurovision” website, there is a list of 42 countries participating in this year’s selection, which have been confirmed by the EBU, and again, Macedonia is not on that list either.

Under the list, the change from the 2017 election is that Russia will again participate, and Macedonia will not.

The EBU stated last week that “Macedonian Radio-Television” is currently ineligible to participate at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest, as it was under sanction due to its non payment of debt.

MRT sent a statement announcing its debts to various creditors, which amounts to EUR 19.5 million, but said that the repayment of the debts and the normal funcion of the house were obstructed by the debt of the Public Revenue Office (UJP has) towards MRT, which is 34 million euros.

In terms of debt and problems with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), MRT now owes a little over one million euros, but according to the announcement, a meeting was held between the two bodies and it was decided to abolish all sanctions for MRT and all the services of the EBU are now available to the Macedonian public broadcaster.

Eurovision Song Contest 2018 will be held on May 8th, 10th and 12th in Lisbon, Portugal.
